    Sammanfattning : This essay deals with recurring grotesque motifs in Mikael Niemi’s novels Kyrkdjävulen, Populärmusik från Vittula (Popular Music from Vittula), Fallvatten and Koka björn (To Cook a Bear). It aims to widen the academic understanding of Niemi’s works by focusing on their aesthetics in relation to previous studies, which have mostly been concerned with placing Niemi in a context of Tornedalian minority literature.     Sammanfattning : This thesis attempts to form a definition of the concept “ero-guro-nansensu” which refers to a cultural movement in Japan during the early 20th century that explored the erotic, grotesque and nonsensical. It will use the definition to analyze three Japanese horror films made long after the movement’s supposed end, to determine if it is still relevant and useful for studies of current Japanese culture.     Sammanfattning : This thesis offers a holistic perspective on the phenomenon of embodying Otherface. It provides a deeper insight into the categories Transface and Cripface, the latter being a term for an able person depicting a person with visible or invisible disabilities, also referred to as cripping up.
